Born and raised in Sydney, Matthew David Johnson, known to Bachelor fans as “Matty J,” shot to fame in 2016 when he debuted on season 2 of The Bachelorette Australia. He didn’t find his love back then as the bachelorette Georgia Love dumped the fan-favorite over Lee Elliott in the finale.
However, Matty didn’t let Georgia’s rejection get him down and returned as the bachelor for Season 5 the next year, where his quest for love came to an end. Finally, the reality star found his one true love with a Sydney-based jewelry designer Laura Byrne.
Now, Matty J is not only engaged to his girlfriend-turned fiancée Laura, but he shares a lovely daughter Marlie-Mae Johnson with her, becoming an adorable family of three.
In April 2019, the Sydney-based radio presenter popped the question to Laura while on vacation in Fiji and became engaged. Two months after, the pair welcomed their bundle of joy, daughter Marlie-Mae on 20 June. The family of three now lives in Bondi.
Last month, the doting parents celebrated their daughter’s first birthday. Proud father Matty shared a video tribute to his 1-year-old daughter on his Instagram page. Mother Laura posted a series of pictures from Marlie-Mae’s first year and captioned:
“Happy birthday to this sassy, funny, smart, cuddly, nocturnal, smiley little slice of human pudding. Being your mummy, your back up dancer, your chef and chauffeur is the best gig in the biz. We love you.”
The 6-foot-2 Matty J recently celebrated his 33rd birthday this month on 06 July, enjoying a laidback family vacation on the NSW South Coast with his fiancée and their daughter. His partner Laura shared a loving tribute to her man on his birthday, sharing pictures of herself, Matty, and their daughter and captioned:
“Happy birthday to my copilot, my baby daddy and my best mate @matthewdavidjohnson. Nobody can make us laugh or pull off a pair of budgy smugglers like you can. WE LOVE YOU!!!!!”

The pair had planned to celebrate their wedding this year, but the Covid-19 pandemic made them change their wedding schedules. Most probably, they will tie the knot next year.
Matty J is one of five siblings raised single-handedly by their mother, Ellie Johnson. He is not in contact with his estranged father.
Matty once revealed that his closeness to his mother and sister Kate helped him relate to other women. He has three brothers Dave, Tom, and Adam.
