Taylor Hawkins, the longtime drummer for the rock band Foo Fighters, has died. He was 50.
Who was Taylor Hawkins?
Taylor Hawkins had been the drummer for the Foo Fighters for 25 of the band’s 28 years, taking over for original drummer William Goldsmith in 1997.
Oliver Taylor Hawkins, who was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1972, grew up in Laguna Beach, California. He began his career as a drummer in the modest Southern California band, Sylvia, before landing his first major gig as a drummer for Canadian singer Sass Jordan. He then worked as Alanis Morissette’s touring drummer until Grohl persuaded him to join the Foo Fighters in the mid-1990s.
What’s The Cause of Taylor Hawkin’s Death?
Authorities in Colombia published a statement Saturday afternoon noting that the Foo Fighters’ drummer was found to have 10 drugs in his system at the time of his death, without declaring that he died of an overdose.
The attorney general of Colombia revealed in a tweet that the 50-year-old singer had antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids in his system, along with THC. It did not go into additional detail about the drugs discovered, and the attorney general’s statement avoided using the word “overdose.”
The Foo Fighters were on tour in South America. They performed at a festival in San Isidro, Argentina on Sunday and were set to perform at another in Bogotá, Colombia on Friday night.
A message on the band’s official Twitter account reads:
“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children, and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”
Hawkins was undoubtedly the most prominent member of the Foo Fighters after founder and frontman Dave Grohl, appearing in interviews alongside Grohl and playing important roles in the band’s videos.
