Who is Anita Alvarez?

Two-time Olympian Anita Alvarez, born December 2, 1996, is a Mexican-American artistic and synchronised swimmer. She is originally from Buffalo, New York.

As a 14-year-old teenager, Anita competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trails. But her professional career kicked off a year after she graduated from Kenmore West Senior High School in 2014.

Making her way into the women’s USA Synchronised Swimming National team, Anita competed at the 2014 Junior World Championships and the 2015 World Championships. At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, she took part in the women’s duet with Mariya Koroeleva.

It was in 2019 when Anita achieved her biggest achievement. She earned a bronze medal in the 2019 Lima World Championships for the Women’s Duet and Women’s Team. The same year, she earned the USA Synchro Athlete of the Year award. She was also named USA’s Artistic Swimming Athlete of the Year in 2021.

What happened to Anita Alvarez at the Budapest World Championships?

During her solo free final routine at the Budapest World Championships on July 22, Anita lost consciousness and was in danger of drowning. She sunk to the bottom of the pool and was within seconds of death.

Fortunately, Anita’s coach, Andrea Fuentes, jumped into the pool and rescued her from drowning. She was then given immediate medical attention.

Thankfully, Anita is in good condition now. According to doctors, her oxygen, sugar levels, and blood pressure are all “okay.” Anita’s coach Fuentes confirmed the reason behind this horrific moment was due to Anita having water in her lungs.

This is not the first time Anita has fainted inside water. In 2021, she had collapsed during an Olympic qualifying event in Barcelona.

Anita comes from a family of athletes. Her mother, Karen Alvarez, is a former Olympian who competed in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials with her duet and placed 7th. Her father, David Alvarez, is also a former athlete and has coached two Olympians but not in the sports they became Olympians in.

In addition, Anita’s grandfather was in charge of all the off-ice officials in the 1980 Olympic Games, and he was also the timekeeper of the ‘Miracle of Ice’ hockey game in Lake Placid, NY.
