Heritier Lumumba is a Brazilian-born Australian former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club and Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League. He is the first Brazilian-born player who played an AFL match.

Lumumba is back in the headlines after he recently accused former Magpies coach Nathan Buckley of allowing p*rn and homophobia in team meetings. Having already accused the club of having a racist culture and accusing Buckley and former president Eddie McGuire of creating an environment in which racism was accepted, Lumumba has now levelled more devastating accusations.

Heritier Lumumba, who was known as Harry O’Brien in his time at Collingwood, was born on the sacred indigenous lands of the Guarani, in a quaint little hospital that sits on the top of Cais do Valongo. He comes from a powerful, matrifocal community in Rio de Janeiro, where his cultural tradition, known as Jongo, has been well preserved.

Heritier Lumumba Family – Parents & Siblings

Lumumba hasn’t revealed the names of his parents. He was born to a Brazilian mother and Congolese father in Rio de Janeiro and moved to Western Australia with his mother to be raised by his stepfather when he was three.

Lumumba later adopted the surname of his stepfather Ralph O’Brien, who died suddenly in 2009, at age nine. He also shortened Heritier to Harry and became known as Harry O’Brien.  He met his biological father when he was 19.

According to Lumumba, it was the beating of drums that drew his biological parents together. His Congolese father, who arrived in Brazil seeking asylum from a brutal civil war in Angola, was performing a traditional Kongolese dance at an event for Brazil’s ‘black consciousness.’ His father’s performance caught the eye of the Jongo Bassan da Serrinha community, which his mother was a part of. The two eventually started dating and got married.

Lumumba has a sister named Raquel O’Brien. He also has two brothers whose names are unknown.

Lumumba is a happily married man. He has been married to his wife, Aja Byrd, for a long time now. The pair shares a son whom they named Yala. They welcomed their son on April 9, 2019. Their son’s name “Yala” is a Kikongo word for leadership.
