Joe’s career started after he was drafted to Essendon under the father-son rule, with the tenth overall selection in the 2012 national draft. He joined the Bombers and made his debut against Carlton in round 11 in 2013.

Throughout his career, Joe has earned a nominee for AFL Rising Star in 2014, 22under22team in 2016, won Anzac Day Medal, and Mark of the Year in 2017. Unfortunately, Joe was ruled out for the remainder of 2019 due to a groin injury.
