Brendan Kerry is an Australian figure skater. He is a three-time Olympian and an eight-time national champion in Australia, winning his first title a decade ago. He is the Australian flag bearer at Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, where he delivered a personal best score of 160.01, combining a technical score of 83.51 and a presentation score of 76.50, in the men’s figure skating at Beijing’s Capital Indoor Stadium.

Brendan Kerry drew inspiration for figure skating from his mother, Monica MacDonald. His mother is a figure skating coach and former competitor in ice dancing.

In the 1980s, Brendan’s mother became a four-time Australian national champion with Rodney Clarke, and she later won three national titles with Duncan Smart (1990-1992).

Before moving to Riverside, California in 2012 to train with Tammy Gambill, Brendan was coached by his mother. Nothing much is known about Brendan’s father other than his name i.e. John.

His Sister also Competes in Ice Dance

Brendan is one of five children born to his parents. He has four sisters – two of them are Chantelle Kerry and Lilly.

One of Brendan’s sisters, Chantelle, is also an athlete like her mother and brother. She is a former ladies’ singles competitor, and now she also competes in ice dance.

As an ice dancer with Andrew Dodds, Chantelle has become a two-time Australian national champion and competed at two Four Continents Championships. She was a figure skater at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics.

He is a Three-Time Olympian

Brendan Kerry is now a three-time Olympian and an eight-time Australian champion. He made his debut in the Junior Grand Prix series of the International Skating Union (ISU) in 2008.

Following that, Brendan made his senior debut at the 2011 Four Continents Cup Championships. In ten appearances at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, he has only finished outside the top-20 once, with his best result being 9th in 2018-19.

Brendan competed for the Nebelhorn Trophy, the final qualifying tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics, in September 2013. He finished in the eighth position and received one of the six remaining spots to go to Sochi.

As a 19-year-old, Brendan finished 29th in the short programme in Sochi, two years after moving to California to pursue a full-time career as a figure skater.

Brendan had two podium finishes in the 2015-16 season, winning gold at the Gardena Cup in Italy and bronze at the Nordic Open. In 2017-18, he won two more bronze medals at the Lombardia Trophy in Italy and the Ondrej Nepela Trophy in Bratislava.

Brendan placed 20th in PyeongChang 2018 before winning back-to-back Halloween Cups in 2019-20 and another gold medal at the Torun Cup in Poland. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 ISU World Championships were cancelled, and Brendan was forced to withdraw from the 2021 worlds because of a foot injury.

He had a personal best total score (231.36) for the short program-free skate in December 2021, finishing sixth at the 2021 Golden Spin of Zagreb in Croatia.

Brendan secured a berth for Australia at the 2022 Winter Olympics after finishing seventh at the 2021 CS Nebelhorn Trophy. He placed seventeenth in the short program of the men’s event at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
