Rwandan-born Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa, who is known for giving life to Eric Effiong in Netflix’s hit ‘Sex Education’, has been announced to succeed Jodie Whittaker as the lead in the longest-running British TV series ‘Doctor Who.’ He will play the beloved Time Lord in the series, becoming the first-ever non-white actor to play the lead role.

Though Ncuti Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda, his parents raised him in Scotland as his family moved there during the 1994 genocide. At the time, Gatwa was only two years old. His family then lived in Edinburgh and Dunfermline.
Gatwa’s family lived in university accommodation while his father, Tharcisse Gatwa, studied for a PhD in philosophy and theology. His father later moved to Cameroon, leaving the family, because he was unable to get work as an academic in the UK.
